Kate Garraway has told how she has "fantastic moments" where she and her husband Derek Draper are able to communicate.

Draper spent more than a year in hospital after falling ill with the coronavirus in 2020 and now needs round the clock care.

But Garraway shared on Loose Women that the pair now sometimes interact, with her husband speaking in a "whisper".

The TV star - mum to son Billy, 13, and 17-year-old daughter Darcey - opened up as she explained that although Draper had recently been back in hospital there were some good things happening.

"It's very much a whisper and I don't think we are necessarily have a conversation," she said.

"But you get fantastic moments when he will suddenly... this is so silly but, like, Billy had a new basketball and he was bouncing it and suddenly Derek said, 'Is that a new ball?'

"And we all just went, 'Yes yes it is!' He said, 'It's nice.'

"Seeing him able... it's unbelievable. It's something you take for granted but to have him be able to interact in that way. Billy was in tears and they were hugging.

"It's things like that that really lift you up. But then the next day he just is completely still."

Asked what advice she would give her younger self, the presenter said it would be to "seize the day".

"You just don't know what's around the corner," she said.
