Kate Garraway thanked her husband Derek Draper for his “incredible fighting spirit” as she won a National Television Award (NTA) for her documentary about his COVID battle.

The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband spent more than a year in hospital after falling ill with the coronavirus in 2020, and this week she shared that he was back in hospital again with sepsis.

Last year Garraway won the authored documentary prize at the NTAs for her documentary about his illness, Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, and last night (13 October) she won again for her follow up programme, Caring For Derek.

She went on: “So the mercy of that is this is going to be brief, because I have very little prepared. I want to thank all of you.

“I brought my daughter here Darcey, we managed to speak to Derek – he is back in hospital at the moment fighting on so incredibly and we’re hoping he’s coming home again.”

“I want to thank Derek for his incredible fighting spirit,” said the star, who married the former political adviser in 2005.

“I want to thank ITV for being so brave to put something which actually is touched in all the incredible documentaries about care.

“We have a care crisis in our country. But we don’t have a crisis of love.

“The professional carers are extraordinary; the millions who care for people they love are extraordinary. And I think that’s probably why you voted for this because you know it’s all of you we all feel alone.

“We all need some care and love. So thank you so much.”

“It means the world to all those people,” she added.

Draper first fell ill in March 2020 and he returned home to Garraway and their two children - Darcey and 13-year-old son Billy - in April 2021.

Draper previously had sepsis this summer and this week Garraway said he was unwell again.
