Katie Piper has eye sewn shut to avoid losing it completely

"It is for people with a damaged cornea or a disease of the cornea."

TV presenter and activist Katie Piper has unveiled her latest surgery on TikTok.

It has been 15 years since the heinous acid attack that blinded one eye and burned her face and Piper is still a regular visitor of the hospital. This week she underwent a procedure known as a tarsorrhaphy.

"Hey guys!" she said in a video. "A little update for you: I have had an operation, I went to hospital on Tuesday to have a tarsorrhaphy.

"It is a permanent closure of the eye using stitches. It is for people with a damaged cornea or a disease of the cornea.

"So in my case, my burn injury destroyed my cornea and I've had transplants over the years, but my cornea kept thinning, which meant I got lots of different defects and infections. And sadly, what happened to me recently is I got a perforation in the eye, which means a hole in my eye.

"When you have a hole in your eye, you obviously lose your eye, so I've had to have a tarsorrhaphy to save my eye - preserve the surface so that I don't have the eye completely removed."

The Loose Women panellist suggested the healing time may take up to a whole year.

As if a tarsorrhaphy wasn't enough, Piper also needed further surgery on her remaining right eye.

She explained to her 326,200 followers: "I had some scar tissue from a previous skin graft that was getting quite bulky and thick, so they had to remove that scar tissue. But other than that, I'm living life! I'm doing good."

Pre-empting some potential nastiness in the comment section, the star signed off with a poignant note for her "TikTok friends and enemies".

"Don't send me insults, don't troll me, because you never know what could happen to you in life," it began.

"You could just be living your life and something like what happened to me could happen to you. So remember that expression: be kind."

Piper has had more than 400 surgeries on the injuries that she was left with after the acid attack in 2008.

Now the star has become a household name and she uses her celebrity platform to raise awareness for victims of burns and other disfigurement injuries.

One of the ways she brings about change is through her charity, the Katie Piper Foundation.

Another important role in her life is being a mum to her two children - Belle and Penelope - whom she shares and raises with her husband Richard Sutton.

While she was only out of hospital from her eye surgery, she has got straight to work on putting up the Christmas decorations for her children.

She told a piece to camera on Instagram: "I got out of hospital yesterday and the kids were going on and on about wanting the Christmas tree up. They want the decorations up.

"They just get so excited about Christmas, so I'm surrounded by bits. I'm making a star. We've got three trees in the house. It looks like chaos. Rich got it all out the garage for me.

"I've already smashed a few decorations. I forgot some of them were glass. So I've got the dustpan and brush out already. But I'm making a good start."

The mum said she didn't want to let her children down.

She added: "This is going to be a little surprise for them when they get home from school today. Because I think they thought I was going to let them down and not do it.

"But actually, I'm feeling quite sprightly for day two or three post operation. And it's making me want to be a little more Christmassy."
