Amid their latest resurgence, synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys have dropped a new music video for their latest single A New Bohemia. It won’t take long for Kent fans to spot that the clip was shot right here in our own county.

In particular, it is picturesque Margate that lends its iconic scenery as the backdrop of this four-minute long video. Opening on the neon-lights of Dreamland’s retro-aesthetic roller room, the stage is set for a musical journey around the resort town.

The clip then cuts to the Pet Shop Boys themselves, vocalist Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe, standing on the steps that lead to the entrance of Dreamland’s former cinema. This landmark was also recently the focal point of Sam Mendes’ 2022 flick Empire of Light, which centres around a seaside cinema and stars Olivia Coleman and Toby Jones.

Next we move over to the sign of the former Cliftonville Lido, which also features on the cover of the single. While the swimming pool itself has since been filled with sand, the brightly coloured sign still stands today, a reminder of the beginning of British seaside tourism, in which Margate played a massive role.

It seems the video itself is a homage to Britain’s coastal tourism as the video shifts focus from the duo to what appears to be a group of day trippers making the most of a day out in Margate. Journeying from the Harbour Arm to Margate’s Main Sands, the town’s distinct beachfront can be seen throughout the video.

Watching closely, you’ll be able to spot the Turner Contemporary gallery towering in the background of several shots. Even the divisive Arlington House block of apartments can be seen in several shots, alongside the Ferris wheel and amusements of Dreamland.

We then return back to the roller rink for the final main chunk of the clip which is now full of skaters and dancers. For the very last seconds of the videos, we see the Pet Shop boys sitting on the steps leading down to Margate Main Sands opposite Dreamland, completing their trip to the seaside in classic fashion with a portion of chips.

This single comes from their recently released album Nonetheless, which has been met with high praise from fans and critics alike. The single features tracks not on the album, It's not a crime and I've got plans (involving you), as well as demo and remix versions of A New Bohemia.

It’s not just the Pet Shops boys who have made the most of Margate for music video shoots in recent months. The Libertines have made the coastal town the focus of their latest project, ‘All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade’, having used the area as a shooting location for their recent singles. The band has had a strong connection to the town for many years.
