Tributes to Kevin Campbell have been tied to the gates of Goodison Park following the death of the former Everton striker.

It was announced earlier today that Campbell had died at the age of 54 following a short illness. The striker was instrumental in the 1998-99 season as his five goals in nine games saved the Blues from relegation.

Campbell played for several clubs during his illustrious playing career, including at Arsenal where he won the league title in 1991, the FA Cup and League Cup in 1993 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1994.

Arsenal confirmed the tragic news this morning in a post on X: "We are devastated to learn that our former striker Kevin Campbell has died after a short illness. Kevin was adored by everyone at the club. All of us are thinking of his friends and family at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Kevin."

Bouquets of blue and white flowers have now been left outside Goodison Park in memory of "super Kev". One handwritten message said: "That spell where you scored 9 goals in 8 games to keep our blue boys up will be forever cherished in my heart.

"Leading the line wearing the famous number 9 shirt and becoming a Goodison hero and legend. I wore the 2000/02 shirt with Campbell 9 on the back with immense pride.

"I am absolutely devastated with the news of your passing today. Rest easy super Kev!"

Another said: "Thanks for the memories RIP Super Kevin Campbell."

A third note, attached to a bouquet of blue and purple lilies, said: "RIP super Kev."

Everton paid tribute to Campbell on Saturday in a statement which said: “Everyone at Everton Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of the club's most popular and much-loved former strikers, Kevin Campbell, at the age of 54.

"Not just a true Goodison Park hero and huge fans' favourite, Kevin was the Blues' first black captain and also an incredible person, as anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him would know.”
