Kevin Pietersen has been mocked online after claiming he was to wear a plastic ring and remove his watch to visit London. The former England cricket ace posted a photo of his hand and ring on X, formerly Twitter, with the caption "Gotta go into London today. NO WATCH and a plastic ring! Congrats, @SadiqKhan!"

X users were quick to deride him, satirising his posts with an number of witty responses. Copy editor Dave Whittam wrote: "How does he think it feels to live here? I don't even dare wear clothes in case I get mugged. I just wander round nude with my Oyster card jammed up my arse."

Comedian Rosie Holt said 'You may laugh but since @SadiqKhan has been mayor when I leave the flat I can only wear plastic clothes and have to bring my pigeon with me instead of my phone'. Former Labour spin doctor Alistair Campbell called it the 'Twattweet of the Day', while sketch writer John Crace told Pietersen it was best he travelled in an armoured vehicle.

Our beloved capital city may not be the only place the South African-born batsman is fearful of flashing his cash around. Photos from the ACA-VDCA Stadium, where Pietersen did commentary during an England v India Test Match in Feburary, show the cricketer wearing a remarkably similar ring to the plastic ring he posted on X.

Older photos of Pietersen doing commentary at the Edgbaston Stadium in 2022, show him wearing a sparkly silver ring on the same finger. It may be evidence Pietersen was less concerned about crime levels in Birmingham on his trip there as he opted to wear a more expensive bit of jewellery.

In any case, Pietersen performed a reverse ferret in the afternoon, posting an 'Update' on X to reassure followers about his safety. With a photo of him smiling posted on Tuesday afternoon, he wrote: "UPDATE! In London and having the most wonderful day. This city is absolutely incredible. Congrats, @SadiqKhan!"

So far Mayor of London Mr Khan is yet to be drawn on the jibe, but has promised another 1300 police officers for London if he is re-elected and a Labour government wins the keys to Downing Street.
