A Kippford man has organised an eye-catching motorcycle charity run for cancer research from Dumfries to Kippford on Sunday.

Donald Reid and around 20 other dapper riders will take part in the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in aid of the Movember charity.

Funds raised will go towards prostate cancer research and treatment as prevalence of the disease among men continues to rise.

The cavalcade will leave Holywood at 11am with arrival at the Mariner pub and restaurant in Kippford expected around 11.45am.

The riders will make the journey on assorted vintage-styled machines – Donald will be on a 1982 950cc Moto Guzzi Spada remodelled into a three-wheeler.

The 63-year-old, who survived a terminal cancer diagnosis four years ago, said: “I had a target of £1,000 but I’m already at £2,057 plus pledges and more would be most welcome.

“I’m doing The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride with fellow men and women across the globe.

“It’s to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men’s mental health on behalf of Movember.

“It’s been very successful over the years and last year 900 riders in many countries raised £7 million.

“The ride is about raising awareness – men die on average six years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons.

“The number of men who are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. Last year three people came up to me and asked if they should get checked out. One got a positive cancer diagnosis and had his prostate removed – that was only because he saw what we were doing.”

Donald added: “So I’m going to be pressing my tweed and polishing my boots for Sunday. I would ask folk to join me in raising funds and awareness for this cause by donating what you can.

“It’s all about helping the men we love live happier and healthier lives.”
