Knife Angel to visit Weston-super-Mare during anti-crime tour

The Knife Angel is coming to a town near Bristol for a month. The Knife Angel, created out of more than 100,000 confiscated knives and blades, aims to raise awareness of the effects of violence and aggression and curb knife crime.

The striking artwork will go on display at the Italian Gardens in Weston-super-Mare from Wednesday, May 1 until Thursday, May 30. The 27 ft tall statue, designed by artist Alfie Bradley at the British Ironwork Centre, is visiting the seaside town as part of a nationwide tour highlighting the issue of violent crime.

Somerset Live reports that The North Somerset Violence Reduction Partnership will be creating a month-long programme throughout the Knife Angel’s time in North Somerset. This will include activities themed around violent crime, include educational workshops, art installations and community competitions.

A knife amnesty will also take place throughout May, with anyone able to dispose of blades with no questions asked and no fear of reprisals. Alongside this, Weston-super-Mare will be presented with the Knife Angel Torch and will be on display in The Sovereign.

Visit Weston-super-Mare shared: "This piece of art is shaped like angel wings, and it’s been created from blades of knives confiscated by or handed into the police. The torch will be on display throughout May in the Sovereign Centre, Weston-super-Mare. It will also form part of the procession planned for the closing ceremony on Thursday, May 30."

North Somerset Council executive member for safety in the community Councillor James Clayton previously said: “Violent crime, including knife crime, is a major issue across the UK.

"The Knife Angel symbolises the devastating impacts that this can have on communities. Securing the Knife Angel’s visit to North Somerset will serve as a catalyst for us, and our partners, to highlight violent crime through a month of action.

"We want to make sure the Knife Angel’s powerful message leaves a positive and lasting impact. It also provides an opportunity for us to showcase the fantastic work already being done to address violence.

"This includes our multi-agency VRU, as well as our Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women and Girls team.” Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Shelford, said: “Knife crime is a serious issue, and one that is high on my agenda.

"I am pleased that we have provided funding, through the Violence Reduction Unit, towards hosting this remarkable sculpture in the Avon and Somerset area. It will provide a striking visual reminder of the devastating affects knife crime can have on individuals and families.

“While the sculpture is in the area, we will be working with key partners to help raise awareness of, and educate young people about, the dangers of carrying knives and the lasting impact it can have on their lives."
