Largest rise in violent crime in a decade

Police recorded the largest annual rise in crime in a decade with nearly five million offences over the last year to March, new figures show. The number of crimes in England and Wales recorded by the police rose 10% on the same period in 2015/16, according to the Office for National Statistics. The government have used the low crime figures over the past few years to argue that their cuts to the police service have not impacted on the police's ability to do their jobs effectively. The Police Service of England and Wales has suffered the biggest cuts of any in Europe.
