The Last of Us star joins new movie with Sadie Sink

The Last of Us saw Murray Bartlett star in the series' most heartbreaking episode — and now he'll be singing his own heart out in an original rock opera film opposite Stranger Things' Sadie Sink.

From Searchlight Pictures, O'Dessa is a new musical movie set in a post-apocalyptic future. Sink, who stars as Max in Stranger Things, takes the lead role as a farm girl who sets out on a quest to recover a family heirloom.

On the journey, she'll travel to a dangerous city and meet her true love. The only catch is that she has to save his soul. Deadline reports that Kelvin Harrison Jr will play the love interest, described as an "unholy mix of Iggy Pop, Marlene Dietrich and Prince".

There are no details of Bartlett's role in the film just yet. O'Dessa also stars Regina Hall in an undisclosed role.

O'Dessa is written and directed by Geremy Jasper, who also wrote and produced original songs for the movie with Jason Binnick.

Bartlett, who also starred in season one of The White Lotus, was recently seen as Frank in The Last of Us opposite Nick Offerman's Bill.

Bill and Frank gave viewers one of the most emotional moments in the series, but it was actually a vital episode for the entire HBO show. The Last of Us show boss Neil Druckmann recently opened up about how that episode informed the season finale.

"The notion that there is no such thing as life without you, that I don't understand what life would be without you, that it's a pointless life without you, is set up in episode three," Druckmann said.

"If Bill doesn't go through this life with Frank, he's not gonna write that letter and leave the letter behind. And the letter is not going to say to Joel... 'This is why we're here; we are here to protect the person we love, and God help any motherf***ers that get in our way'."

He continued: "All roads lead to this moment, and so maybe the least filler-y thing we did across this entire season was the Bill and Frank story; it's the skeleton key for everything that happens."

The Last of Us airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK.
