Christopher Meloni is reprising his Law & Order: SVU role as Elliot Stabler in a new spin-off series from Dick Wolf.

The actor starred as Stabler in the NBC show's first 12 seasons before bowing out in 2011, with the character written off when he abruptly retired from the police force.

Deadline reports that the spin-off led by Meloni has been given a 13-episode series order and will revolve around the NYPD organised crime unit led by Stabler.

The Big Apple setting means that fans can hope one day Stabler's path could cross with his former SUV colleagues, particularly Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson.

Stabler and Benson were not just partners on the force but they were also best friends. And off-screen, the two actors have remained tight even though they haven't worked together in nearly a decade.

Last September, Hargitay shared a pic of the two of them hanging out, captioning it: "Sunday night dinner."

Back in 2017, Meloni revealed he has never been asked to reprise his Law and Order role on the show.

"It's never been brought up to me," he said. "That's the kind of question that's kind of out of my hands. I have always said I would be open to it. Circumstances have to be right, that's all."

Meanwhile, Law & Order is currently in its 21st season, which is scheduled to end on April 16.

But there's plenty more life left in the show yet, as NBC has already renewed it for its 22nd, 23rd and 24th seasons.
