Lee Marshall: Voice Of Tony The Tiger Dies

One of the actors who supplied the booming voice of Tony the Tiger in breakfast cereal commercials has died.

Lee Marshall, who began voicing the mascot for Kellogg's Frosties, known as Frosted Flakes in the US, in 1999, was 64 years old.

He took over from Thurl Ravenscroft, the actor who first made the line "They're g-r-r-r-e-a-t" a popular household catchphrase.

Marshall, who had a premature deep voice, was just 14 when he got his first full-time radio job in Phoenix. He lied about his age.

He went on to enjoy a career which included being a radio newsman, rock 'n' roll DJ, sports broadcaster and wrestling ring interviewer.

Marshall died of esophageal cancer on April 26 at a Santa Monica hospital, his son, Jason VanBorssum, told the Los Angeles Times.
