Middlesbrough will visit Leeds United at Elland Road in round one of the EFL Cup next season. The tie will be played on either August 13 or 14 and commence the Whites’ latest attempt to win the competition for a second time.

Led by Don Revie, United won the League Cup final in 1968 at Wembley, where Terry Cooper scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win. The closest they have gotten to repeating that feat came in 1996, when Aston Villa beat Howard Wilkinson’s side 3-0 in the final.

It is not a competition which has been kind to Leeds in more recent times. The slide down through the leagues has not helped their prospects either.

The 2016/17 campaign saw the last eye-catching run the team made in this competition. Garry Monk’s side reached the quarter-finals, where they lost to Liverpool, after getting past Fleetwood Town, Luton Town, Blackburn Rovers and Norwich City.

Neil Warnock oversaw a run to the quarter-finals too, in 2012, when the Whites beat Shrewsbury Town, Oxford United, Everton and Southampton before getting thrashed 5-1 at Elland Road by Chelsea.

Daniel Farke’s first taste of the EFL Cup with Leeds ended in round two at Salford City, where they lost a penalty shootout following goals by Matt Smith and Pascal Struijk inside 90 minutes. Last year’s round one was played at Elland Road, where Joe Gelhardt and Struijk secured a comeback victory over Shrewsbury.

Burnley, Luton and the 13 Premier League Clubs not participating in European competitions will enter the competition in round two, with the remaining seven clubs joining the competition in round three. The Carabao Cup remains regionalised in the early rounds with the draw split into a southern and northern section until round three.
