“We are going back to high school with Elle!” said Witherspoon, clad in pink and with doggo Bruiser in tow. The actress/producer said that the series, titled Elle, will reveal how, long before Ms. Woods became a Harvard-educated legal eagle, she was “just a regular ’90s high school girl.”

Witherspoon will serve as an executive producer alongside creator/showrunner Laura Kittrell (High School, Insecure), Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky and Marc Platt.

“I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series!” says Witherspoon in the official press release. “Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?! I’m extremely grateful to the incredible teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine — along with our amazing writer Laura Kittrell — for making this dream of mine come true. Legally Blonde is back!”

The original Legally Blonde debuted in theaters in 2001, with Witherspoon starring as unlikely Harvard Law student Elle Woods. The supporting cast included Luke Wilson, Selma Blair and Jennifer Coolidge. It became a hit, earning more than $140 million at the box office and landing a number of Golden Globe nominations.

The success led to a number of sequels and offshoots, starting with 2003’s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, also starring Witherspoon. It moved to Broadway in 2007 with Legally Blonde: The Musical, with Laura Bell Bundy as Elle; MTV aired a reality competition series the following year seeking the best musical theater actress to succeed Bundy in the role. A third Legally Blonde movie has been in the works for years, with Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor slated to pen the script, but has yet to see the light of day.
