Lethal Weapon season 3 won't air in the UK until 2019, but that won't stop us from getting excited about season 4.

It's certainly been a troubled journey in the lead up to season three.

But with reports of key actors finally having fun on the set following Clayne Crawford's departure from the series, we can't imagine they'll want to hang up their guns and badges if season three's a success.

"We're only the first [episode] in but it's definitely a lot lighter in tone and we're having fun - on and off set," lead Damon Wayans said.

Still, he has no hard feelings about the situation. "I wish him the best. Onward and upward for everybody," he said. "It's a lot looser. Nobody is overthinking; we're just doing and we're having fun trying to get home."

Season three will see Wayans' character Murtaugh trying to come to terms with the death of his old partner Riggs, but he'll be introduced to a new, energetic character in Wesley Cole (Seann William Scott).

So, what can we expect from season four of the show?

Considering how much he had to go through to actually enjoy making the show, you can expect Damon Wayans to return. And, unless he goes bonkers between now and next year, Sean William Scott will return as Roger Murtaugh's enthusiastic new partner Cole.

Fox Entertainment's president Michael Thorn is certainly pleased with the casting. "Seann is a fantastic addition to this already amazing cast.

"Lethal Weapon is packed with action, drama and pure fun, and we can't wait to see Damon and Seann together on screen."

Of course, audiences will make the final decision on the new casting, with Crawford doubting it'll be easy. "It's a little different when you replace Becky [from Roseanne] or the mom off of Fresh Prince. If they'd replaced the Fresh Prince, we'd have been like, 'What the f**k are we watching anyway?'. That's why I just didn't think it was possible."

But, if season three is successful enough to lead to a season four, you can also expect Maggie Lawson as Cole's ex Dr Natalie Flynn to return, as well as Jordana Brewster as Dr Maureen Cahill, Keesha Sharp as Trish Murtaugh, Kevin Rahm as Captain Brooks Avery, Johnathan Fernandez as Bernard 'Scorsese', Michelle Mitchenor as Detective Sonya Bailey, Chandler Kinney as Riana Murtaugh, and Dante Brown as Roger 'RJ' Murtaugh Jr.

Lethal Weapon season 4 release date: When will it broadcast?

Obviously it's a bit early to tell (they haven't started shooting it yet) but judging by the previous pattern, the show will air in the UK in early 2020.

The show is very different to the movie series (especially now that Riggs has been booted off the programme), but we'd absolutely love it if they incorporated elements of the original Lethal Weapon 4. Throw some Chinese triads in as the villains and give us cameos from Joe Pesci and Chris Rock and we'll be eternally grateful.

Just don't expect Shane Black to write it – he's happy to never watch the television adaptation of his breakthrough brand, and to simply collect his residual cheques from the doormat instead.

"I will be entirely upfront with you: I have not watched a full episode of the show, so I can't speak to whether or not the first guy was great. I just didn't watch it," Black said.

"It's a TV cop show. Maybe it's great. I'm happy it's doing well. I do get a cheque every now and again. But please, let's cast – I don't know – anybody in the role. A talking penguin? I don't care. I'll get a cheque."
