Two best friends bravely opened their A level results live on Good Morning Britain today (August 17).

Unfortunately for Liam Scroggie and Joe Sylvester, who are students at Winstanley College in Wigan, the former didn't quite get the news he was hoping for when he opened his letter.

He needed an A and twos Bs in order to get into Queen's University to study politics.

Awkwardly though, when he was asked if he was happy with the results, Liam said: "No, I got a B, a C, a B and a D. I don't know what will happen now."

Viewers tuning into the programme at home commented on the uncomfortable scenes.

One wrote on Twitter: "'Did you get what you needed?' 'Errrr no' Awkward #GMB."

Another then added: "@GMB Keep us updated on what Liam does so brave to open those results live on air. Keep smiling there will be a uni place for you..."

"Gutted for the kid that opened his results on live TV this morning and didn't get the results he needed #alevelresultsday #gmb," said someone else.

Shortly after, a fourth wrote: "Can't be happy with that – failing on national tv after such a big build up. Harsh world. #GMB #alevelresultsday."

Fortunately for Liam, his headteacher was nearby and reassured that everything would be fine despite the fact he had not achieved the grades he was aiming for.

She said: "The first thing Liam and I will be doing now is looking at UCAS track to see what options he has. There are more university places than ever this year so we are very confident that Liam will get in somewhere. We just need to check that out."

It wasn't all bad news though.

Joe needed a B and two Cs to be accepted onto an accountancy apprenticeship scheme.

When he opened his results envelope, the teen discovered he had surpassed expectations and had been awarded A, A* and B.

Good Morning Britain airs on ITV, weekdays at 6am.
