Liar delivered not one but two big twists last night: first, rapist Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd) was killed off, his throat slit, just as Laura (Joanne Froggatt) finally uncovered indisputable evidence linking him to a string of attacks.

Second, we were told that the wild thriller would be back for a second series – though not till late 2019, with filming set to begin the January after next.

Plenty of time, then, to come up with a few theories as to who killed Andrew. We've already got our suspicions. Who do you think dunnit?

1. Jennifer / DI Vanessa Harmon

Top of pretty much everyone's suspect list is Jennifer (Jill Halfpenny), the soldier girlfriend of DI Harmon, recently returned from Iraq. In fact, Liar fans were speculating weeks ago that the first series might end with Jen offing Andrew – long before we even knew a second series was on the cards.

"He needs to face the consequences!" an angry Jennifer fumed after Andrew was cleared of raping both Laura and Vanessa, and she was last seen staring steely-eyed at a news report about the surgeon's disappearance, with her clearly troubled partner at her side.

Maybe Jennifer operated alone to take out Andrew and Vanessa doesn't know? Or perhaps Harmon discovered what Jennifer had done after the act?

Or possibly they worked together – it's rather suspicious that Laura couldn't get hold of Vanessa in the hours leading up to Andrew being exposed.

2. Katy Sutcliffe

Katy (Zoë Tapper) was desperate to repair her relationship with Laura after her affair with Tom (Warren Brown) drove a wedge between the sisters.

She stole Andrew's phone from his locker at the hospital, a gesture which ultimately helped Laura to bring her attacker down. "I'd do anything for you," Katy insisted. "You know that."

Would she go so far as to kill Andrew? We're not ruling it out.

3. Tom Bailey

Warren Brown's dodgy copper not only loathed Andrew for attacking Laura, he also blamed the rapist for costing him his job – it was Tom authorising a groundless search of Andrew's home which led to his suspension from the police service.

"I should've smashed his face in when I had the chance," he seethed, having learned that Andrew filmed his attacks. Rejected by both Laura and Katy, and with no job, it appears Tom has nothing left to lose – might he have gone after Andrew on his own?

4. Luke Earlham

Even as the accusations against Andrew piled up, Luke (Jamie Flatters) refused to think bad of his awful Dad.

But, as the first series drew to a close, he finally appeared to be cottoning on to the truth, especially after Andrew asked his son to lie to the police about his whereabouts on the night of Vanessa's attack.

Did Luke confront his father, demanding the truth? Might the truth of Andrew's crimes, and how he'd goaded Luke's mother into killing herself, have driven the teen to murder?

Bit of a rogue choice, this one, but he's clearly close to his partner Harmon and would go to great lengths to protect her – might there be a darker side to family man and general good egg Rory that we've not yet glimpsed?

6. Ian

Not lovely Ian! Laura's new boyfriend (Kieran Bew) might seem like the perfect gent, but this show is called Liar – could he be a long-shot suspect for Andrew's murder?

He got a good, long look at Laura's attacker when they spotted Andrew on their date... maybe he went away and schemed to ensure his beloved's safety once and for all?

7. Laura Nielson

Laura spent the entirety of Liar's finale seeking out evidence to ensure Andrew's conviction, and after snatching a big bag of evidence containing recordings of all his assaults she finally managed to prove his guilt.

So she's in the clear for his murder... right?

Maybe not. There's a gap of weeks between Laura bringing the recordings to the police and us seeing Andrew's dead body in the empty marshlands. Who's to say a showdown between the two didn't occur in that period?

If Andrew had gone on the run after being exposed, Laura might have tracked him down in an attempt to convince him to turn himself in. The confrontation escalated, things got violent and... well, you know what happened next.

8. Andrew Earlham

Yep, there's actually a theory going round that Andrew, backed into a corner, might have died by his own hand.

It seems pretty unlikely given the nature of his injury – could he possibly have slit his own throat? Unless he took his own life and his body was then manipulated to make it look like a murder?

Only two years – two years!! – until we find out.
