Lidl and Tesco join Sainsbury's and Aldi in hiking cost of shopping staple
If there is one shopping essential that will make its way into any Brits shopping basket, it is a box of tea bags.
Similar to many other essential grocery items over the past few years, certain boxes of tea bags have been getting a bit more expensive at nearly every UK supermarket. In fact, quite a few have increased their cheapest boxes.
Tesco has recently "matched" its price with Aldi by bumping up the cost of its 80 Stockwell Bags to 94p recently. Meanwhile, Lidl has also increased the price of its Knightsbridge 240 Red Label Tea Bags to £2.79.
According to The Manchester Evening News, the change means Tesco now works out at £1.88 for 160, whereas Lidl is £1.86. It comes after both Aldi and Sainsbury's also increased the costs of their cheapest 160 box of bags up to £1.89.
Even though Lidl has increased its tea bag prices, the supermarket still remains the cheapest option for a basket of essentials this week. The Manchester Evening News regularly compares the cost of essentials at major supermarket chains.
The budget supermarket giant was the most affordable with a total of £12.11 for tea bags, milk, bread, butter, coffee, beans, chicken and mince. Meanwhile, Morrisons was the most expensive for a third-consecutive week with a total of £12.37.
Aldi remains second cheapest, at £12.14, followed by Tesco at £12.32, and Asda and Sainsbury's, both £12.33.

It is worth mentioning that two supermarkets have disputed or disagreed with the weekly comparison findings. Aldi says that it does not take into account like-for-like products or ‘the higher quality’ of its products, with the grocer saying that its beans are 20g heavier than Sainsbury's and that its teabags are 'better quality than the comparative products used'.
Asda is another supermarket that didn't agree with the findings, as it said that the small amount of products used did not represent the fuller picture of prices and does not account for deals. According to Asda, across the board, its Just Essentials range is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi's.
