Lightning Flashes in Pitch-Black Kansas Night as Storm Knocks Out Power

A severe thunderstorm left hundreds without electricity in northeastern Kansas early on Thursday, April 18, as wind gusts downed tree branches and damaged power lines.

Video footage and images captured by Kury Williams show damage caused by “absolutely insane winds,” including a toppled playset, as flashes of lightning illuminated the stormy landscape near Belvue, where the power was out.

The National Weather Service warned residents to brace for tennis-ball-sized hail, lightning, and gusts reaching 65 mph. Credit: Kury Michelle via Storyful
