A video has captured the moment a lightning strike lit up the sky near Queen Anne in the Port of Southampton last night.

Lightning can be seen illuminating the night sky as Queen Anne was berthed at the Mayflower Terminal having arrived for the first time on Tuesday.

Cunard’s newest cruise liner will depart Southampton on Friday on her maiden voyage to Spain and Portugal.

The lightning strike comes after the Met Office issued a weather warning for thunderstorms, which was in place from 8pm Wednesday evening until 8am on Thursday morning.

A lightning strike was also captured in Ashlett, veering across the night sky.

A spokesperson for the Met Office warned what to expect during the thunderstorm, stating: "Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some houses and businesses could be lost.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds."
