The 27-year-old reality star attended the ceremony with his girlfriend, Little Mix star Jesy Nelson, 28, who won the award for Best Factual Entertainment show for her documentary about social media trolling Odd One Out.
Hughes was pictured outside their south London hotel in the early hours of the morning in a tussle with a photographer.
Police are now investigating a report of assault and criminal damage made against the TV presenter and model.
Hughes wrote on his Instagram stories: “I want to address last nights altercation. I was having an amazing night celebrating the award my girfriend deservedly won. After coming out of our hotel a particular paparazzi decided to repeatedly call me a name I wouldn’t call my worst enemy, and physically try and start an altercation.
“As everyone can see I retaliated back badly to this which I totally regret. I’m human. No different to anyone elseS However I want to make everyone awaer this was only in self defence.
“I hope people I care about including my followers, family and friends can forgive me.
“This night was about Jesys win and I am sorry if I distracted anyone from this.
“Ultimately, I’m the proudest boyfriend ever and want to congratulate my amazing girlfriend for a deserving win. I am so proud of you. [sic]”

Nelson has apparently not let the event ruin her night. She posted on Instagram this morning to say: “Guys I honestly do not even know where to begin with this post! I woke up this morning and my heart is bursting with happiness! I cannot thank you all enough for making this moment happen, there are no words to describe how this moment felt and because of you guys you made this one of the most magical nights of my life! I love you all so much thank you.”
At the ceremony she made an emotional acceptance speech, saying: “I did not expect this to have such an impact and I'm grateful such a negative experience in my life turned into a positive one."
The 28-year-old singer took part in BBC documentary Odd One Out last September in which she confessed she had tried to kill herself because she was brought to such a low point by online trolls.
