It is three months to the day since Jürgen Klopp announced his plans to leave Liverpool and the Reds finally appear to have identified the man to take over. Liverpool is in talks with Feyenoord over appointing manager Arne Slot at the end of the season.

Slot, 45, went public with his interest in taking over at Anfield on Thursday night, with Liverpool negotiating a compensation fee with the Dutch giants. "It seems clear to me that I would like to go to Liverpool,” he told ESPN.

“Now I am waiting to see whether the clubs reach an agreement. I have every confidence in that. The clubs have to do their job and then I am waiting. I have to respect that."

Slot's appointment could be confirmed before the end of the season, with Liverpool now having just four matches remaining of the Klopp era. The Dutchman took over at Feyenoord in 2021 and led his side to the Eredivisie title last term.

He has also lifted the Dutch Cup this season and his captain Gernot Trauner admits the players would not begrudge Slot the opportunity to test himself in the Premier League. "As a whole, we appreciate what he has done for us, how he has developed the team," Trauner told ESPN.

"It is not done yet so of course we hope he stays here. But we also know that there will come a time for him to take that next step. If that is Liverpool, nobody will blame him. If it happens, I will be very happy for him."

His comments were echoed by goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, who outlined just how Slot has turned Feyenoord's fortunes around. He added: "The coach has achieved something fantastic at the club over the past three years.

"When he came, we had a completely different philosophy — playing football from the back was not really our thing. But also just the professionalism, everything about him. The entire organization has improved a lot."

Feyenoord responded to the speculation over Slot's future by beaten Go Ahead Eagles 3-1 on Thursday night. That win secured second spot for the Eredivisie side and a place in next season's Champions League.

Liverpool.com says: It is clear that Slot has the respect of his players, who are grateful for the work he has done at Feyenoord. Liverpool is a huge opportunity and it appears that he will be given the chance to lead the post-Klopp era. He will be eager to get the Reds dressing room on side and push for the title next season.
