Liverpool vs Southampton team news and line-ups: Xherdan Shaqiri starts, Roberto Firmino returns

Xherdan Shaqiri makes his first competitive start for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp makes three changes for today's meeting with Southampton.

The Swiss is joined by Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino in coming into the Reds' starting XI, as Daniel Sturridge, Joe Gomez and James Milner drop out of the side that defeated Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

As expected, Firmino replaces the scorer of the opening goal in midweek, Sturridge, while Matip takes the place of Gomez to partner Virgil van Dijk in the centre of defence.

Milner's absence likely means Shaqiri will be deployed in a No.8 role, with Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum supporting him in the middle of the park.

That leaves Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane joining Firmino in a familiar front three for the hosts, who are looking to make it seven wins on the bounce to start the new campaign.
