Liverpool Wavertree is one of the newest of the city’s five seats having only been created in the last 30 years.

Made up of the two former Liverpool Broadgreen and Liverpool Mossley Hill constituencies, it has been held for the most part by Labour since its first election in 1997, coinciding with the party’s landslide romp into government. However, in 2019, the seat wore a number of colours with then-MP Luciana Berger leaving the Labour Party to sit as an independent, part of Change UK and with the Liberal Democrats.

It was won comfortably by former shadow frontbencher Paula Barker in December of the same year. As part of the boundary commission changes brought in last year, the seat has gone through a series of amendments ahead of next week’s election.

Church ward has transferred over to Liverpool Garston while Old Swan is now in the boundary of Liverpool West Derby. It has gained Greenbank, Mossley Hill and St Michael's wards from Liverpool Riverside and covers a large area of the south of the city including Aigburth, Sefton Park and Penny Lane.
