Lizzo's Grammys 2020 Performance Had a Flute Solo, Ballerinas, and a Touching Kobe Bryant Tribute

Lizzo brought a dose of high energy to the Grammys broadcast, performing "Cuz I Love You" and "Truth Hurts" for her first-ever performance on the show's stage. But before she sang a word, she dedicated the Grammys broadcast to NBA legend Kobe Bryant, who tragically passed away in a helicopter crash today. "Tonight is for Kobe," she said, before beginning to sing.

Lizzo brought a lot of spirit to the show, dressing up in a black sequined gown first, and then a bodysuit to sing "Truth Hurts". There were ballerinas in LED tutus and a flute solo Lizzo added in for kicks. Altogether, it was visually stunning, as people on Twitter quickly shared.

Lizzo has eight nominations tonight: one for Record of the Year ("Truth Hurts"), Album of the Year (Cuz I Love You Deluxe), Song of the Year ("Truth Hurts"), Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance ("Truth Hurts"), Best R&B Performance ("Exactly How I Feel"), Best Traditional R&B Performance ("Jerome"), and Best Urban Contemporary Album (Cuz I Love You Deluxe). It's her first-ever time attending the Grammys.

Lizzo spoke to ELLE in the fall about performing live, and how she feels when the crowd chants her name. “I don’t need an encore chant after every song, even though they do that sometimes," she said. "But when it does happen, I open my arms to receive it, because it’s happening for a reason, and I’m so grateful for it.”

She also explained how important self-care has become to her. “I take self-love very seriously," she started. "And I take it seriously because when I was younger, I wanted to change everything about myself. I didn’t love who I was. And the reason I didn’t love who I was is because I was told I wasn’t lovable by the media, by [people at] school, by not seeing myself in beauty ads, by not seeing myself in television...by lack of representation. My self-hatred got so bad that I was fantasizing about being other people. But you can’t live your life trying to be somebody else. What’s the point?”
