LL Cool J Says This Was the Telltale Sign His Daughters' Boyfriends Weren't Right for Them (Exclusive)
The rapper shares his four kids with his wife of nearly 30 years, Simone I. Smith
Having LL Cool J as a father-in-law might be more nerve-racking than you'd think.
In an interview with the rapper for his new Coors Light Super Bowl commercial, LL Cool J was asked about a scene in the ad where a dad is meeting his daughter's boyfriend. The musician, who is dad to son Najee, 33, and daughters Italia, 32, Samaria, 27, and Nina, 22, who he shares with wife Simone I. Smith, opened up about a few parallels to his personal life.
"Yeah, I've had some moments where some boyfriends have given me awkward handshakes and stuff like that," he told PEOPLE on set. "You know what I'm saying? Don't quite get it yet. They can't figure out how they want to...you know what I mean? And I've seen the bottom lip with the tremor."
"I'm saying that's a giveaway that you might want to rethink that choice a little bit," he clarified. "All that tremor lip and all that. When we see tremor lip, how are you going to handle the world if you tremor lip with me?"

"You want to be a little more solid than that. You know what I'm saying? But that's just my personal opinion."
In the commercial, the rapper saves a young couple from an awkward moment during a family football game watch. The daughter introduces her boyfriend to her dad and tensions build when the boyfriend realizes he is in the opposing team's jersey.
The woman suggests they have a Coors Light, and then LL Cool J drives the train from a faraway place — through a beach, a wedding, a suburb, and even a movie set featuring country singer Lainey Wilson — and straight into the family's home. He smiles and says, "Oh shoot! I forgot to play the song" and then The O'Jays "Love Train" plays.
When it came to raising daughters, LL Cool J said he always made sure to nurture and encourage his girls.
"All while they were growing up, I might catch my daughter while she's coming out of her room on the way to a soccer game and I just grab her and say, 'You know you can do anything you put your mind to. You know you're beautiful. You know you're special,' " he said in his episode of Oprah's Master Class.
While speaking to Steve Harvey in 2020, LL Cool J spoke about his daughter Nina pursuing a musical career.
"My youngest daughter Nina, she's a singer ... she really has that gene, and she loves it," he said. "I'm going to support her, but she has to make it. Daddy will help, but you gotta make it. What I am not going to do to my children is ruin their lives by giving them everything they should work for."
