The God of Mischief is officially back. The second season of Marvel’s spin-off series Loki, starring Tom Hiddelston, has arrived on Disney+.

The successful first series saw Asgard’s horned anti-hero land in a limbo land run by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) after messing with the Tesseract during 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. It’s down to this clandestine organisation to keep all of the multiverse’s chaotic timelines in check — something that becomes increasingly difficult when Loki enters the scene.

After befriending a female variant of himself known as Sylvie who has been causing chaos in the multiverse, the pair set off to find the mysterious and all-powerful figure behind the TVA — but inadvertently cause more trouble in the process.

The God of Mischief is back on Disney+ for another season of his time-tampering stand-alone series. With reviews popping up like rogue variants in our own online timeline, we’re slowly starting to get a handle on whether or not the show’s return was worth the wait.

Our own review wasted no time in pointing out that Loki season two felt a bit slower than its predecessor but found some added energy with the introduction of new characters like Ke Huy Quan’s Ouroboros, calling him the “highlight of the series.”

The Telegraph was less subtle, writing that the series had “too little of Loki’s malevolent charm” and “far too much of everything else.” The Independent had similar thoughts but commended the series’ production design and the fact that the show remains “genuinely unpredictable from one episode to the next.”

Plot problems were a gripe for the Evening Standard, which said it simply has too much of it, with The Hollywood Reporter suggesting that the series looked great but felt a little “purposeless.”

The first trailer for Loki season two landed in August 2023 and wasted no time plugging us all back into the multiverse madness.

During this brief first look, we find Mobius and a glitching Loki pay a visit to techy TVA operative Ouroboros, giving us our first look at Ke Huy Quan’s MCU debut.

Elsewhere, we see the duo cross paths with a variant of He Who Remains and Sylvie who appears to be lost in her own corner of the multiverse. Watch it below.

A few weeks later, we got another few snippets of footage via a short ‘first look’ teaser. Here, we find Loki literally being pulled through time, flitting between the past and the future and trying to make sense of an extremely bizarre situation.

This brief trailer also gave us another proper look at Jonathan Majors’ He Who Remains. Watch it below:

In September, Disney released a new featurette showcasing Loki’s decade-long history in the MCU - from his first appearance in 2011’s Thor, right up to his return in his own stand-alone series.

“I feel excited and inspired about where we go next,” smiles star Tom Hiddelston, commenting on the show’s return. Watch the full featurette below.

As per the show’s title, Hiddleston will once again return to play Loki and Marvel’s resident loveable rogue and God of Mischief. He’ll be joined by Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, a TVA agent who is forced to join forces with Loki in order to get to the bottom of all the timeline trouble the pair are experiencing.

Sophia Di Martino is also back as Sylvie, the Loki variant that Hiddleston’s Loki became close with throughout the show’s first series before — spoilers — the pair were separated during its climactic cliffhanger ending.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is back as TVA judge Ravonna Ranslayer, as is Wunmi Mosaku’s fellow TVA variant tracker Hunter B-15. Fans of the animated TVA mascot Miss Minutes will be pleased to know that she returns too, with Canadian actor Tara Strong providing her voice once again.

Meanwhile, Everything Everywhere All At Once Oscar winner, Quan, joins the series as Ouroboros — or OB — a character adept at fixing things for the TVA.

Despite his MCU future remaining undecided, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’s Jonathan Majors returns as the sinister He Who Remains, a master of timelines that appeared in Loki’s first series and is undergoing a path that will lead his variant, Kang The Conquerer, to force the Avengers to re-team.

Elsewhere, the show’s new series is also expected to include appearances from Bad Education actor Rafael Casa in an as-yet-undisclosed role that's tipped to be important. Based on moments featured in the show's second trailer, we can see Casa playing Brad Wolfe an actor who, in the Thor comics at least, is possessed by the villain known as Zaniac.

Game of Thrones’ Kate Dickie will also appear in the show, with many outlets suggesting she will play a villainous character.

*Reader beware: Loki season 1 spoilers lurk below*

As we mentioned earlier, Loki season one saw our titular anti-hero mess with the multiverse alongside an equally untrustworthy female variant of himself named Sylvie.

After delving deeper into the tangle of the timeline, the duo eventually meet the all-powerful figure behind it who is here referred to as He Who Remains.

Visually, this character appears the same as Kang The Conquerer, the baddie played by Majors who caused Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang some trouble in the third Ant-Man movie. However, He Who Remains is not the same as Kang the Conquerer; Kang is a variant who is undergoing a separate narrative path in the MCU.

During the final moments of season one, we learn that He Who Remains is the sole survivor of an epic multiverse war that only ended when he killed off all of his own variants and was forced to stand guard over a multiverse in need of constant pruning. After Sylvie gets the better of the TVA’s mysterious boss, she inadvertently causes an unpredictable multi-pronged timeline issue that can’t be controlled by the TVA.

Meanwhile, Hiddleston’s Loki is transported back to the TVA’s HQ and quickly tries to warn others about his impending dilemma only to discover that he’s landed in the wrong timeline and is unfamiliar to all who work there.

When it comes to the plot of Loki season two, Marvel has stuck to their old tricks and kept things quiet, presumably in an attempt to surprise us all when the show’s episodes land.

We do know that the series will follow Loki and Mobius as they attempt to fix the trouble caused by He Who Remains and his variants, while also trying to track down Sylvie.

‘Timeslipping’ — something Loki is currently battling with in all of season two’s trailers — is also something the character will have to contend with, forcing him to relive key moments from the MCU’s past. While taking place on a fractured timeline, it is also possible the new series will glimpse into Loki’s future — both predetermined and that of an entirely new and separate fractured timeline.

Loki season 2 airs on Disney+ from Friday 6 October, with new episodes launching weekly
