London Critics' Circle Awards 2018: The Crown's two Queens Claire Foy and Olivia Colman battle for Actress of the Year

The nominations for the 39th London Critics’ Circle Film Awards have been announced, with Olivia Colman and Claire Foy competing for Best Actress.

Colman recently took over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Foy in Netflix drama The Crown, and has been recognised by the Critics’ Circle for another royal role, receiving a nomination for her portrayal of Queen Anne in The Favourite. Foy picked up a nomination for her performances in First Man, Unsane and The Girl In The Spider’s Web.

They’re joined in the Best Actress race by Colman’s The Favourite co-star Rachel Weisz, Mary Poppins Returns star Emily Blunt and newcomer Jessie Buckley, who has been nominated for her performance in Beast.

Darkly comic period drama The Favourite leads the awards race with 10 nominations in total, including Best Film, Director, Screenwriter and British/Irish Film of the Year.

Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War, Rupert Everett’s The Happy Prince, Alfonso Cuáron’s Roma and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here each earned five nominations, and are in contention for Film of the Year alongside BlacKkKlansman, First Man, First Reformed, Leave No Trace and Palme d’Or winner Shoplifters.

Director Pedro Almodovar will receive the ceremony's top honour, the Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Film.

“Our members have gone against expectations this year in their voting, so our list of nominees is very distinctive in the current awards season, including selecting two women for best director and honouring some performances that other groups are overlooking,” said awards chair Rich Cline. “With such a wide range of titles on the ballots, getting a nomination is a real achievement

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on January 20 at the May Fair Hotel.
