A SCHOOL in Laverstock had to be evacuated this afternoon because of a gas leak on London Road.

The Journal understands the gas leak has been caused by a HGV hitting a gas pipe.

The wind then carried the gas across to St Joseph's on Church Road, setting off the school's alarms and causing it to be evacuated.

The school will reopen as usual tomorrow morning and the leak happened outside of school hours.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has said: "We were advised by SGN of a gas main leak at a site off London Road, Salisbury at 4.12pm today (April 17).

"Two crews from Salisbury are on scene and a water carrier is en-route from Andover to support the 100m exclusion zone that has been put into place. This safety cordon has led to London Road being closed and trains being stopped by Network Rail."

SGN has been contacted for more information.
