So good a list we wait a whole decade for it: Granta’s snapshot of the most promising young writers. This new one is the US list, released every 10 years and in its third cycle. You can place your bets for some future prize-winners from its predictions.

Previous Granta-garlanded writers include, Jonathan Franzen, Jonathan Safran Foer and Jeffrey Eugenides. The UK version picked out Martin Amis, Kazuo Ishiguro and Zadie Smith.

In this new, 21-strong list, revealed to The Londoner today, you’ll find Emma Cline, acclaimed poet-turned-novelist Ben Lerner, All Our Names author Dinaw Mengestu, and Ottessa Moshfegh, on last year's Man Booker list. Candidates must be US citizens, but its a distinctly international list: several were born overseas.

If Donald Trump was much of a bookworm — he has announced that he hasn’t read many books — then he may wish to fit a new shelf in the White House. Maybe next decade. The full list is out this afternoon.
