A concert celebrating the soundtrack of Lord of the Rings has been cancelled at The Lowry just days before it was due to take place.

The Music of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit was scheduled for Sunday night (April 14), and was promoted to feature the ‘best music from the films in concert’ as performed by a symphonic orchestra and choir.

The event at the theatre, in Salford Quays, was also set to feature special guests including actor William Kircher, who appeared in the three Hobbit films as dwarf Bifur.

However, a listing on the theatre’s website says the event has now been cancelled altogether and ticket holders are being contacted regarding returns. Posting on the website, the listing for the event now says: “Unfortunately this performance (Sunday 14th April) has been cancelled.

“Customers with tickets should contact the box office to exchange their tickets or obtain a refund. We apologise for any inconvenience or disappointment caused.”

Event organiser Star Entertainment have toured the world with the show as well as similar productions based on the Harry Potter movies. A spokesperson for the organiser told the M.E.N the event had been cancelled due to ‘unforeseen production issues’.

The original Lord of the Rings films, directed by Peter Jackson, were released between 2001 and 2003. Based on the original books by J. R. R. Tolkien, and featuring a score by Howard Shore, the trilogy grossed more than $2.9 billion at the global box office.

A spokesperson for The Lowry added: “The concert performance of The Music of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit due to take place on Sunday 14th April has been cancelled. We are currently in the process of contacting customers to arrange an exchange or refund on their tickets for this event.”
