'Loud bang' as car crashes into front of house wiping out bay window overnight

Residents heard a loud bang and screeching tyres as a car crashed into the front of a house, taking out its bay window.

It happened on Havelock Street in Thornaby in the early hours of Tuesday (April 23) morning, at about 2am.

A vehicle is said to have reversed into another vehicle which then went into the front of the terraced home, police said.

One neighbour said: “I was woken by a loud bang around 2am, I heard a vehicle screeching off and the next thing the street was full of blue lights.

“It’s the second time a vehicle has gone into a house on this street as it happened to another house not so long ago.”

Pictures from the scene show a gap where the window would have been with the lower part of the wall reduced to rubble.

No one was injured and an investigation is underway.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: “Officers were called to an incident on Havelock Street, Thornaby, in the early hours of this morning (23rd April).

“It was reported that a vehicle has reversed into another vehicle which then collided with a property causing significant damage. Fortunately, no one was injured.

“Enquiries are currently ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting reference number 073781.”
