Love Island has received more than 3,000 complaints in just two days, amid claims of misogynistic behaviour from some of the male contestants.

The majority of the complaints to broadcasting watchdog Ofcom related to the ITV dating show’s controversial Movie Night on Sunday (17 July).

The scenes saw the contestants watching clips of their partners getting closer to other Islanders and sent shockwaves through the villa.

The following day’s instalment drew 413 complaints and there were 427 for spin-off show Love Island: Aftersun.

This year's series of the reality show – which is hosted by presenter Laura Whitmore – has attracted accusations of misogyny, with claims that females are shamed for sexual encounters, while men are glorified for the same behaviour.

Domestic abuse charity Refuge has also waded in, saying that the alleged "misogyny and casual sexism" was "extremely concerning".

And Women's Aid has said it has spoken to ITV about behaviour on the show.

Earlier this week, the family of current Islander Luca Bish apologised for his behaviour.

The 23-year-old appeared to encourage other male contestants to be unfaithful while the women had been sent to Casa Amor.

But in a previous episode he reacted angrily to discovering that his partner Gemma Owen had talked to another man.

His family wrote on his Instagram account: "I want to apologise on behalf of Luca for his insensitive reaction on last night’s episode. I know that when he watches it back, he will be embarrassed and deeply apologetic.

"We as his family don’t condone his behaviour, but we do understand he is in an intense environment where his emotions are heightened. Last night was not reflective of the boy we all know and love at home."

Yahoo has contacted ITV for comment.
