Love Island bans smoking in villa and garden this year

From Digital Spy

Love Island has confirmed that there will be no smoking in the villa or garden this year.

The reality show returns for its fourth run this summer but, unlike previous years, contestants will be made to use a designated smoking area outside the villa if they want to light up.

This year's batch of single islanders will also only be able to use the smoking area alone, which will naturally limit the amount of action there deemed interesting enough for broadcast.

A camera will remain in the area, however, so contestants could still be seen smoking on screen – just nowhere near as much as before.

A Love Island spokesperson told Digital Spy: "There will be no smoking within the Love Island villa or the main villa garden this year."

The format change comes after a deluge of viewer complaints about the large amount of time contestants could be seen smoking last year.

Indeed, during last year's series – which saw Amber Davies and Kem Cetinay crowned champions – almost every islander was at one point spotted with a cigarette in hand.

Love Island will return to ITV2 this summer.

While an official airdate has yet to be confirmed, ITV2 recently released a new trailer teasing what's to come.

Released last week, the trailer sees host Caroline Flack dressed as an airline pilot as she navigates her way through an in-flight safety video done Love Island-style.

Bring it on.

Love Island returns to ITV2 this summer.
