Lyra McKee: Two men charged with journalist's murder granted bail after appearing in court

Two men have been granted bail after appearing in court charged with murdering Belfast journalist Lyra McKee.

Gearoid Cavanagh, 33, and Jordan Devine, 21, both from Derry, appeared via videolink at Londonderry Magistrates' Court.

Ms McKee, 29, was shot dead in Londonderry in April 2019 as she observed rioting in the Creggan area.

The defendants were both also charged with possessing a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life, riot, possession of petrol bombs, throwing petrol bombs and arson.

Cavanagh was also charged with robbery.

The court heard that the police case was that the defendants were with the gunman who fired the shot when Ms McKee was killed.

Defence lawyers said the evidence against Cavanagh and Devine was weak.

The men were bailed by judge Barney McElholm and will appear again on 7 October.
