M5 chaos as first day of Devon County Show begins

There are major delays on the M5 near Exeter in Devon this morning (Thursday, May 16). It is thought there are delays of at least 20 minutes on the M5 as there is an obstruction on the road near the Okehampton turn-off.

Roads and traffic monitoring site Inrix reports heavy traffic on the M5 due to an obstruction on the road. It said: "M5 Northbound partially blocked, queueing traffic due to obstruction on the road from J31 A38 ( Okehampton turn off) to J30 A379 ( Exeter / Service Areas).

"Congestion to all the way back to the A380 in Kenn which is very slow. Travel time is around 20 minutes. Traffic not helped by drivers arriving for Devon County Show."

This morning, traffic cameras show long tailbacks of traffic on the M5 northbound. National Highways has advised all motorists to plan their journeys and allow extra time when travelling in Devon.

It is thought that 100,000 people will visit the iconic event over the next few days. A travel warning has been issued for anyone attempting to travel on the M5, A30 and A38 in Devon during the weekend.

The show at Westpoint Arena begins today (May 16) and gates open at 7.30am. Tradestands open from 9am and the program for the day will kick off at 10am.
