The Conservatives have only just held on to their positon as the largest party on Maidstone Borough Council after a full set of elections.

Across Maidstone, voters went to the polls on Thursday (May 2) in order to cast their votes to fill every seat on the council.

Due to boundary changes, every seat on Maidstone Borough Council was contested. The number of councillors has been reduced by six, from 55 to 49, with each of the 22 wards in the borough electing between one and three members depending on population size.

Before the election, the council was in "No Overall Control". The Conservatives were the largest party with 25 councillors and the remaining seats were held by 12 Lib Dems, six unaffiliated independents, six members of the Green Independent Alliance, four Labour councillors and two Fant and Oakwood Independents

The new wards are: Allingston & Bridge, Barming Heath & Teston, Bearstead & Downswood, Boughton Monchelsea & Chart Sutton, Boxley Downs, Coxheath & Farleigh, Fant & Oakwood, Grove Green & Vinters Park, Harriestsham, Lenham & North Downs, Headcorn & Sutton Valence, High Street, Leeds & Langley, Loose & Linton, Marden & Yalding, Palace Wood, Park Wood & Mangravet, Penenden Heath, Ringlestone, Senacre, Shepway, Staplehurst and Tovil.

Following the 2024 results the Conservatives now hold 13 seats, nine fewer than they had before the boundary changes. It was a strong night for the Greens who went from having one seat to 10 while the Lib Dems are the second largest party on the council with 12 councillors.

The remaining seats are taken by eight independents and six Labour councillors.

The new make up of the council means that the parties will need to negotiate a coalition in order to effectively govern.
