'Major' Police Operation in Hamburg After Man With Axe Shot Ahead of Euros Match
Police in Hamburg said a suspect was shot and wounded on June 16 after threatening them with “a pickaxe and an incendiary device” as soccer fans gathered in the city ahead of the Poland v Netherlands match at Euro 2024.
The incident happened at 12:30 pm, as 40,000 fans were gathered, local media said.
Police said there was a “major operation” underway in the St Pauli area. Footage by reporter Mascha de Jong shows the heavy police presence in that area and the scene barricaded.
