Planning permission has been secured for a huge retail and trade development at a business park on Teesside.

Northumberland Estates have secured planning permission for the mammoth development comprising 52,000 sq. ft. of retail space and a 45,000 sq. ft. trade park at the Wynyard Business Park in Stockton. The substantial endeavour backs Tees Valley's Strategic Economic Plan as well as the Local Industrial Strategy, with Northumberland Estates saying it aims to spur economic growth and fuel job creation in the region.

The nod has been given for phase one of the enterprise to kick off in May 2024 and the site is envisaged to be full steam ahead by May 2025. A drawcard for heavyweight retailers, the latest venture by Northumberland Estates has captured the attention of big names such as Sainsbury's, with Burger King also reportedly interested.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Property Director, said: "We're delighted to confirm that we're bringing a brand new Sainsbury's supermarket to Wynyard Business Park, representing a major investment in the region and creating new jobs. We have an unbeatable combination of quality fresh food, competitive prices, innovative products, useful bright ideas and enthusiastic people, which will all help us to bring good food to more of our customers in and around Tees Valley."

Currently, Wynyard Business Park stands as a high-quality landscaped mixed-use commercial development and is considered one of the distinguished business sites in Tees Valley. This has not only attracted new companies to the area but also houses over 60 businesses and approximately 5,000 employees.

The impressive 30,000 sq. ft Sainsbury's store alone foretells at least 120 job opportunities. The location benefits from excellent transport links, reliable connectivity and forms part of the larger Wynyard area which boasts superior residential properties.

Anthony Cape, Senior Asset Manager at Northumberland Estates, expressed: "We have seen really strong interest from businesses in the trade and retail sectors for this new development, and we hope to be in the position to confirm details of some of those occupiers in the coming months."

Notably, the upcoming development plans to incorporate renewable energy options within the scheme. This includes EV charging points and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that will capture energy from solar panels and unleash it when needed.
