Major search for person in water at Plymouth Hoe


A major search and rescue operation is underway on Plymouth Hoe after a person reportedly got into difficulty in the water. Lifeboat crews, police boats and a Coastguard helicopter are at the scene on the waterfront, where a person was reported in distress just before 1.30pm today (Thursday, June 27).

A Mayday relay has been broadcast, a spokesperson for HM Coastguard has said and local vessels have been asked to assist in the search. One local said: "There are coastguard and boats out. One lifeboat is heading towards Bovisand and the helicopter is over Mount Batten just hovering. A police boat is out as well."

Flight trackers show a Coastguard helicopter has been looping over the waterfront since around 2pm today and is still in the area as of 3pm. For more updates on this story throughout the afternoon, visit the live blog on our website.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard said: "Just before 1.30pm today (27 June) HM Coastguard received a report of someone in difficulty in the water at Plymouth Hoe. A search and rescue helicopter has been sent along with the Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the Plymouth RNLI lifeboats.

"Local vessels have been asked to assist and a Mayday relay has been broadcast. Devon and Cornwall Police are also on scene. We have no further information at this time."

Devon and Cornwall Police boats are also out on the water to aid the search. A spokesperson for the force added: "Emergency services are currently in the area of Plymouth Hoe following concern for a person in the water.

"We are assisting our Coastguard and RNLI colleagues who are dealing with this incident."
