Emergency services are currently at Crosby Beach conducting a search for a 14-year-old boy who has gone missing after swimming in the River Mersey.

Merseyside Police have confirmed that a search operation is underway for the teenager, who was reported missing after he went swimming with friends in the river earlier on Sunday evening.

The teenager was last spotted swimming near the radar tower at Crosby Beach along with a group of his friends. While his friends managed to get out of the river, he got separated from them and hasn't been seen since.

The coastguard, police, fire and rescue units, helicopters and the ambulance service were all involved in the search overnight, the BBC reports.

A section of Crosby Beach near the radar tower has been cordoned off as the search continues and Merseyside Police is asking people to avoid the area.
