Major Tube upgrade for one London Underground line - when revamped trains are coming

Transport for London (TfL) is in the process of upgrading its Central line Underground stock and has outlined how many revamped trains will be in service during the coming years. Costing half a billion pounds, the improvements, bosses say, will ensure a 'smoother' to ride and combat crime as parts were failing, causing delays.

Officials were forced to introduce an emergency timetable earlier this year in an attempt to combat disruption endured by customers. Delays were caused by a shortage of trains due to regular repairs.

The revised schedule saw 'more even intervals between trains', and, on the Night Tube, the Central line has a train every 12 minutes in its central section.

A range of parts are being updated at TfL's depot in Acton. These include new motors and replacing wheels that have become too small after years of wear on rails.

New LED lights have also been added, making carriages brighter. In addition, smarter, more up to date computers with more diagnostic capabilities will replace the ones currently in place that were developed in the 1980s.

A new moquette - the woven pattern on Tube seats - is also being installed. Called 'Tupenny', the pattern is designed to reflect the various parts of the 1992 stock, and is named after the original price for a ticket on the route.

When trains will be reintroduced

Now, TfL has outlined how many of these upgraded trains will be in service on the line during the coming financial years.
