A makeup artist has warned that the incorrect use of products could unintentionally make you look up to a decade older.

Most people who use makeup will agree that it can make a person look and feel better, making for a great confidence boost. From a light layer of foundation for a quick outing to a full glam face for a special occasion, there are many ways that cosmetics can boost the appearance - if used correctly.

One expert has explained the common application mistakes that people are guilty of making, which could be adding years to your face, certainly not the desired outcome. Makeup artist Wayne Goss says although people think they are delaying the effects of aging by making up their face, many are guilty of doing anything but, the Mirror reports.

He explains: "The majority of us will be using makeup to help improve how we look, or even help cover up some of the wrinkles we've gained over the years. However, due to some mistakes, the makeup that we're wearing could actually be doing the opposite effect, and could potentially be adding not just one or two, but up to ten years to our face."

Wayne, who boasts over four million YouTube subscribers and more than 700k followers on Instagram, has identified three common blunders that can age your appearance. He also shares his top tips for avoiding these pitfalls to maintain a youthful look.

Here's what you need to watch out for.

1. Ditch the metallic eyeshadow

"Steer clear of metallic eyeshadows and instead, go for a matte," the expert suggests. "Matte is generally the better choice as it doesn't highlight wrinkles or creases."

Wayne launched his First Edition Collection brushes last year which were snapped up in no time, and he emphasises that brushes, not fingers, are key to achieving a flawless blend with your eyeshadow.

"Powder is also easier to apply over creams, especially as it blends more smoothly with a high-quality brush," he adds. "Never blend eyeshadow with a finger - top-notch brushes are designed to blend well with hooded eyelids and fine lines.

2. Pick your concealer carefully

Choosing the wrong shade of concealer could be ageing you prematurely, and it's a mistake many people make.

"Generally speaking, people often choose a concealer that's too light for the area around their eyes, which can add years to your face," he cautions. "So it's crucial to find a colour that matches your skin tone.

"Cream concealer is always preferable to liquids, and I'd strongly advise applying some on the inner corner of your eye, as that's the one part of the eye that doesn't crease."

3. Always moisturise and use a primer

Dry skin can age you prematurely, so it's crucial to use the right products and keep your skin moisturised.

"As we age, our skin naturally becomes drier, which is why hydrating ingredients become increasingly important," says Wayne.

According to him, there's a wonder ingredient you should be looking for in your skincare products. "When you're shopping for makeup and skincare, look for products containing Hyaluronic acid to ensure your skin stays hydrated," he advises.

Prepping your skin before applying makeup is also essential. "Before you start putting anything on your face, make sure you've applied a rich moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated," he adds. "Use a quality primer before applying your make-up - it acts as a barrier between your skin and the make-up, helping it stay put all day, rather than settling into fine lines."
