Malpractice, a new medical thriller, was already getting Line of Duty comparisons ahead of its premiere tonight (April 23).

Despite both shows being completely different in setting, the show hails from World Productions, the team behind the ITV hit show, so naturally viewers are curious if there will be any similarities.

Helen Behan – who plays Norma Callahan in the new series – opened up about how it feels to be compared with Line of Duty already.

"I suppose the danger with World Productions is it being compared to Line of Duty, the Mecca of World Productions productions," she told RadioTimes and other press.

"But no, I didn't feel that at all. It felt very, very unique when I read it. I didn't think there was anything else like it. It's absolutely its own thing."

The five-part series will follow Dr Lucinda Edwards (Niamh Algar), an experienced doctor, on a shift from hell that culminates in the death of an opioid overdose victim, Edith Owusu.

Although Edwards has a supportive medical supervisor, Dr Leo Harris (James Purefoy), the grieving father of the victim, Sir Anthony Owusu (Brian Bovell), orders an investigation into Edwards' efforts to treat his daughter.

The inquiry is led by Dr Norma Callahan (Behan) and Lucinda's former colleague, Dr George Adjei (Jordan Kouamé).

The investigation takes a toll on Edwards' career, life and marriage to husband Tom (Lorne MacFadyen), with cracks starting to appear the longer the investigation continues.

Line of Duty's Martin Compston revealed in an interview with GQ that he, creator Jed Mercurio and co-stars Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar met up last year to talk about doing another series, but added that ITV hasn't formally recommissioned the show.

Line of Duty is streaming on BBC iPlayer, and DVD and Blu-ray boxsets are also available to buy now.
