A man in his 80s has been killed in a road traffic collision near the Somerset-Dorset border. Police said the local man’s family have been informed.

The collision happened at around 10.50am on Saturday, June 22, and it closed a rural road in the village of Bradford Abbas, near Sherborne, for most of the day, while collision investigators examined the scene.

The man who was killed has not been named, but police said he was in his 80s and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was driving a white Suzuki Celerio car on Grant’s Hill, the road between Bradford Abbas and Thornford, around four miles south east of Sherborne.

The man’s car was involved in a collision with a blue New Holland tractor being driven on the narrow country lane. The tractor driver was uninjured in the collision. Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the man who very sadly died in this collision,” said Sgt Richard Stroud, of Dorset’s Roads Policing Team.

“We are conducting a full and thorough investigation to establish the circumstances of what happened. I would urge any witnesses, or anyone who may have captured relevant dashcam footage, to please make contact with us.

“Finally, I would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding while the road closures were in place.”
