Man, 88, Held Over Elderly Woman's Death

An 88-year-old man has been arrested over the "unexplained death" of an elderly woman in Berkshire.

He was found with stomach injuries while the victim, in her 80s, was declared dead at the scene in Elm Lane, Reading.

The suspect was airlifted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford after officers were called to the property at 11.25am on Saturday.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Glover said: "At this stage it appears to be an isolated incident with no other party involvement."

Forensic experts are expected to search the property for "some time".

"This is a very early stage in the investigation and we are in the process of determining the circumstances leading up to this woman's death and the man's injuries," said a police spokesman.
