Man Buys Turtles From Food Market Then Sets Them Free Into The Sea

A man has saved two turtles from the dinner plate by buying them at a food market then releasing them into the sea.

The live turtles were on sale at a market in Papua New Guinea when Arron Culling intervened.

Along with his co-worker, Mark, he purchased the animals from the stall, but instead of bringing them home to cook and serve them as a dish, he brought them to a nearby beach and set them free into the water.

Mr Culling posted images of the turtles on his Facebook page, where he wrote: “Found these at the local market got them for 50 bucks drove 5km up the road and let them go”.

It isn’t the first time the two men have saved the lives of turtles in Papua New Guinea - they have already bought and rescued about ten of the animals, Mr Culling told The Dodo website.

Marine turtle fishing remains legal in many parts of the world despite the fact that six of the seven turtle species on the planet are endangered or vulnerable.
