Man City star Phil Foden names two things he can't do without and makes England training claim

Phil Foden is hoping his lucky shinpads can power him on as the Manchester City playmaker acknowledged that England must do more.

Gareth Southgate's team are well placed to win their group at the European Championship after four points from two games, but two underwhelming performances have seen the team selection and performances scrutinised. Foden's place in the team was heavily debated after the 1-0 win over Serbia, and there are still questions over where he should be used to get the best out of him.

One thing helping Foden to produce the performances that earned him the Premier League Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year awards is his lucky shinpads - showing him and first child Ronnie. Ronnie became an unlikely global sensation after the Champions League final when footage of him celebrating with the team went viral in South America, earning him the nickname 'El Wey' (The Kid).

"Luckily someone made these for me on Instagram and they're my lucky shinpads," he told England's official media. "I take them everywhere with me and hopefully they don't break because I want to try to wear them all my career.

Foden's teammate Kyle Walker spoke after the disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark earlier in the week to put a positive spin on the performance. Foden reiterated the strong position the team are in but made clear that they need to improve.

"We've had a good start, we've got four points but we expect more from ourselves. I look around at the characters we have and we always expect more from ourselves," he said. "I feel like training has gone up a little bit going into this game. The standard is so high.

"For me, it's probably the most technical England team I've ever seen and training is at such a high level. It's where you want to be and I'm just happy to be here trying to help the team as much as possible."
