Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan struck in the midst of a first-half snowstorm before a late goal from substitute Fernandinho proved enough to secure a 2-1 home victory over West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday.

The win lifts City back up to second place and level on 29 points with leaders Chelsea, who host Manchester United in the late game. WestHam, who snatched an added-time consolation with a superb Manuel Lanzini strike, stay fourth on 23 points.

“It was a very difficult day because of the weather conditions but it is always difficult against this team,” City midfielder Rodri told the BBC.

“We were lucky to get this first goal because in the first half we couldn’t play much. In the second we dominated and could have scored more.”

With thick snow falling for most of the opening half, City’s Riyadh Mahrez had the ball in the net in the 16th minute after a superb finish but his effort was ruled out for offside.

City took the lead in the 33rd minute when Mahrez drove the ball across the goal and Gundogan was on hand to steer it home.

That marked the beginning of a spell of heavy pressure from the hosts and they could have gone 2-0 up four minutes later but Gabriel Jesus’s shot was cleared off the line by Ben Johnson.

Halftime saw the snowstorm abate and an army of groundstaff cleared the pitch. WestHam then had another let-off when Aaron Cresswell made a goal-line clearance as City dominated.

It took the home side until the 90th minute to score again, however, as Jesus teed up fellow Brazilian Fernandinho to net three minutes after he came off the bench.

Having seen little to warm them up during the game, the WestHam fans finally had something to celebrate when Lanzini won the ball on the edge of the area and sent an unstoppable shot into the top right corner with the final kick of the game.

Reaction from Thomas Tuchel

18:53 , Michael Jones

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel spoke to BBC Sport about his team’s draw with Manchester United and says he is happy with his players performance if not the result. He said:

It can happen in football, unfortunately it happened twice to us, it also happened against Burnley.

“I am absolutely happy with the performance. We dominated from the first minute, we were aggressive and never stopped attacking. Unfortunately we scored two goals, one for each side.

“It was a big chance, if he [Antonio Rudiger] maybe hits the target it could have been a fantastic end to a fantastic performance but we have to swallow the result. We played very well and I am happy.

“We were very disciplined and sharp. I am happy with what I saw, it was a pleasure to coach on the sidelines. We can not guarantee results but if we play like this we can increase the chances for results.

“If he [Romelu Lukaku] is fully fit he is a starter for us but he is not at the moment. It was more than I actually wanted but we were so close to the opponent’s goal I thought maybe he could help with his presence.”

Reaction from David De Gea

18:47 , Michael Jones

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea spoke to Sky Sports after the match and says that this performance shows United are improving as a team. He said:

We already improved against Villareal, we won, qualified and now we played a very good team away from home. The effort of the team was very good. They had the best chances. For me it is not enough, a draw. We are in a tough moment. I am proud of the effort of the team.

“On the pitch, in the goal, I was feeling danger for nearly the whole game. We defended well, they missed big chances and the one they give us a chance we score. It is not enough to draw but at the moment it is a big point.

“The last games before we were conceding three or four goals. We are improving. This is just two games. At least now we are defending well. We are fighting for every ball. We are a team.”

Jorginho held his nerve from the penalty spot to atone for gift-wrapping Jadon Sancho a goal and grab Chelsea a 1-1 Premier League draw with Manchester United

Italy midfielder Jorginho failed to control Bruno Fernandes’ up-and-under clearance, paying the price as the last man after a corner.

Sancho cantered through and slotted past a stranded Edouard Mendy to score his second goal of the week and stun the previously-comfortable Blues.

Manchester United secure draw with Chelsea to earn a reprieve before their restart

A day of reprieves, as Manchester United now look to a proper restart.

That may mean Chelsea will see this 1-1 draw as a wasted opportunity against a team very much between managers, especially given the nature of Antonio Rudiger’s late miss. It even put the luckless Timo Werner’s chances into perspective, and that’s kind of the thing for Chelsea. It could have been much worse.

Man City retain ice-cold conviction to ease past West Ham and underline title credentials

17:22 , Michael Jones

Perhaps it was fitting that as Storm Arwen battered the Etihad with snow, Manchester City continued to play with the ice-cold conviction of champions who are confident of retaining their crown.

After comfortably dispatching with one of their rivals for the Champions League in midweek, Pep Guardiola’s title contenders did the same to one of this Premier League season’s early overachievers.

David Moyes and his players are quickly discovering the air is a little thinner at this level, even if it would be premature to say that West Ham’s bubble has burst.

Chelsea vs Man Utd

16:12 , Michael Jones

Reaction from Manchester City’s win over West Ham is still to come but now the focus moves to Stamford Bridge where league leaders Chelsea take on Manchester United. Here are the two line-ups:

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, James, Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek, Alonso, Ziyech, Werner, Hudson-Odoi

Man Utd XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Bailly, Telles, McTominay, Matic, Fred, Sancho, Fernandes, Rashford

There’s no Cristiano Ronaldo for Man Utd who has to settle for a place on the bench as caretaker boss Michael Carrick elects to go with three holding midfielders and pace up top through Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

Chelsea set up in their familiar 3-4-3 formation. N’Golo Kante and Ben Chilwell are injured so there are starts for Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Marcos Alonso whilst Timo Werner is given the nod ahead of Romelu Lukaku to lead the line.
