A Wootton man who stole a car and destroyed it in a crash on the Isle of Wight’s dual carriageway will remain in custody until his sentencing in July.

George James Swain, of Mary Rose Avenue, Wootton, attended the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Wednesday, May 22.

The 25-year-old previously pleaded guilty to using a vehicle without third-party insurance, driving without a licence, aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving.

As previously reported by the County Press, Swain was involved in a four-vehicle collision on the southbound carriageway of Medina Way (dual carriageway) at around 11.30am on April 10.

Swain crashed a Honda Civic Type-R, which had been reported stolen from the car park at Lushington Garden Centre earlier the same morning.

The incident happened around 150 metres from the Medina Way junction (formerly roundabout) on the southbound side of the dual carriageway, towards Coppins Bridge.

Debris was sent across the road, and the safety barriers on either side of the highway were damaged, with the Honda suffering significant front and back-end damage.

The other vehicles caught up in the crash were a blue BMW X5, a black Kia Sorrento, and a grey Nissan Qashqai.

The road was closed for a time, minor injuries were reported and Swain was later charged by police.

At crown court, concerns were raised in court about Swain’s mental health.

Annabel Hazlitt, defending, made an application for her client to be assessed by a medical professional and requested a two-month adjournment for a psychological report to be completed.

Recorder Barry McElduff adjourned the case, with Swain remanded into custody until the new sentencing date on July 23.
